Denver Review

I'm out in Colorado all this week, staying on the outskirts of Denver while the CFSR team conducts the Denver Child Welfare Review. Review days are long -- from around 7:30 in the morning to about 8:30 at night -- and I spend most of that time waiting for something to go wrong with the automation and then attempting to troubleshoot the problem. By the time I make it back to the hotel, I'm pretty worn out, so that means I haven't seen much of the area. I was able to catch up with a friend Sunday night, and I do have a view of the Rockies from my hotel room ... so that's something.

Current Programs of Choice

I had to reformat my laptop today (internet connectivity issues). In the process, I made a quick list of the programs I use most often so that I could add them back after the reformat. I thought I'd offer the list here in case friends or family are curious. Here are my "must" programs:

• Antivirus - I use McAfee because it's free with my Comcast service. Otherwise, I'd use AVG's free antivirus software.
  
• Firefox - My default browser, with a few necessary plugins: Download Statusbar, Delicious Bookmarks, Zotero 1.5, Google Toolbar, XMarks, Read It Later, Remember the Milk for Gmail, Evernote WebClipper (and for online work: FireShot, FireBug, and FireFTP)
• Microsoft Office 2007 - I need it for my work (and they supply the software), but you can get most of the functionality for free using OpenOffice.org
• Evernote - For keeping track of all my notes.
  
• Windows Live Writer - Great little tool for blogging.
  
• Digsby and Skype - For keeping in touch; Digsby combines email notification, IM, and social network updates.
  
• Photoshop and Flickr Uploadr - My job gives me Photoshop, otherwise I'd use Gimp. Flickr Uploadr makes it easy to add pics to my Flickr gallery.
  
• My DropBox - Great fee tool for syncing files across different computers.
  
• Rough Draft, Celtx, and yWriter - For creative writing: Rough Draft for text files (like short stories), Celtx for scripts, yWriter for novels.
  
• 7-Zip and Notepad++ - 7-Zip to unzip just about anything, and Notepad++ for text-editing (HTML, PHP, etc.)

Richmond Snow Storm of March 09

Turns out, we actually did get quite a snow storm last night. I went out last night and again early this morning to take a few pics.

How the Snow Started

This is how the snow started, around 5pm or so. If it keeps up through the night, as the forecasters are predicting, should make for a blanketed Richmond in the morning.
